Obsidian PA6+CF
Obsidian PA6+CF filament was formulated to be a lower-cost Markforged Onyx alternative suitable for all Markforged printers. We developed this material after extensive analysis and testing on our own in-house Markforged printer and many outside beta testers. The result is a seamless printing experience that produces parts with an outstanding appearance and excellent mechanical properties. Made using premium high-modulus carbon fiber and PA6 copolymer, Obsidian™ is an excellent alternative to Onyx that allows our customers to save money when using your Markforged printer.
Don’t have a Markforged printer? That’s no problem – Obsidian is also compatible with all non-Markforged printers that are suitable for printing PA6+CF. Take advantage of the excellent strength, stiffness, and appearance of this specialty material without over spending on Markforged Onyx.
MADE IN THE USA
We manufacture all of our filaments in our 68,000 ft² manufacturing facility (located in Grand Rapids, Michigan) using state-of-the-art equipment and processes. Our goal continues to be to make the most innovative filaments on the market – targeting difficult end-use applications.

Useful alternative, but with some limitations
Due to the high cost of onyx, I tried out several alternative materials for our Markforged Onyx One and Mark Two Printers , Obsidian was one of them In general, we use 3D printing to produce parts for simple to highly complex clamping fixtures for part measurement (automotive, HVAC) as well as parts for automation Two points that leave a somewhat bitter taste with regard to Obsidian is, firstly, the fact that a heatable print bed is specified as necessary, but the Markforged printers do not even have one. In general, it is not possible to intervene in the temperature parameters of Markforged printers, which leaves the user somewhat powerless in this case Secondly, the need for pre-drying is not mentioned on the technical data sheet, the box or the spool itself, but is absolutely essential, as without pre-drying the material tends to string heavily. With a correctly pre-dried material, the purge line is smooth and shiny, slight waviness is an indicator that moisture is still present Smaller details such as lettering in the XY plane are printed more uncleanly than with Onyx, font sizes under 5mm are not recommended. There were no noticeable problems with lettering in the Z plane I have used 8 spools of Obsidian so far and will continue to use it for our measuring fixture construction due to the much more attractive price.
Solid Filament - works for me
I didn't have issues printing Obsidian on my Bambu X1. I adjusted pressure advance (0.012) and Flow ratio (0.92) and it prints perfect. the surface finish feels a little it more rough to the touch (like fine grit sand paper) than Onyx, but looks just as good.
Bad alternative
I also bought two rolls to try. It has the same issue as others: bad stringing, oozing, and clocking the nozzle several times. With the fixed parameters of an MF printer, it is not possible to find a good setting. Waste of time and money. 3dxtech should refund or give credit for different materials...

Terrible stringing and print quality compared to Onyx
I purchased 2 rolls, they came in a nice vacuum-sealed bag. I decided to give this PA-6 Obsidian a try since I was down to 2 rolls of Oynx. The first roll of the Obsidian prints was bad, stringing all over and oozing from the nozzle. So I threw it in the dryer at 85c for 48hrs. I used the second roll and the same thing happened. I had more terrible stringing when printing. So I put both rolls in the oven at 100c for 12hrs, which didn't help. I left the rolls in for 2 more days at the same temp in the oven, and still have stringing. I must have gotten 2 bad rolls but when I used a roll of Oynx, it printed perfectly fine. I don't think I will use this filament again after wasting $260 for two rolls.
